Education attainment is also viewed as a means of reducing crime rates in a population. Education often can provide the economic resources, such as higher earnings and better job opportunities, that reduce the incentives—or in economic terms, increases the opportunity costs—of engaging in crimes. For instance, Lochner and Moretti (2001) found that U.S. states that increased highschool graduation rates saw drastic declines in incarcerations rates.
