The Impact of Public Education on Civic Involvement

Whilst less of a fiscal impact, another social benefit known to stem from education is increased civic involvement. It is suggested that education provides students with the skills and knowledge to make informed decisions, which facilitates civic behaviours—i.e. voting, volunteering, and charitable giving. For example, Dee (2004) and Milligan et al. (2004) found that higher educational attainment generated substantial increases in voter turnout.
